Stopsley to benefit from community skills exchange project

If you live in the Stopsley area and have a skill that could benefit others, you might be interested in the community skills exchange initiative known as Time Banking Stopsley.

The project is a new and exciting way for people to come together to help others while benefiting themselves at the same time.

The project involves someone ‘depositing’ their time by giving practical help or support to someone else in the community. They are then able to ‘withdraw’ their time when they would like something done for them in return. For example, one person could carry out one hour of sewing in exchange for an hour of gardening from another person.

The project is part of the Council’s prevention programme which aims to ensure people in Luton, particularly older people, stay as healthy, active and independent as possible, preventing any illness or deterioration of health.

Voluntary Action Luton, in partnership with Luton Borough Council, is holding an awareness event in Stopsley to showcase Time Banking and how people in the area can get involved.

Cllr Mahmood Hussain, Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care, said: “People who have taken part in similar projects across the country have found it is not only rewarding, but also helps develop a strong community spirit. I encourage you to come along to find out more about this and other prevention initiatives which could help you to live a healthier and more active life."
