Third Sector Assemblies

On the 1st April 2009 the face of local government in Bedfordshire changed Two unitary authorities replaced the three districts and County Council structure.

Bedford Borough Council has been transformed into a unitary authority covering its previous geographical area. Central Bedfordshire Council has been formed to cover the Mid Bedfordshire and South Bedfordshire areas.

The historic county of Bedfordshire is now divided into three areas for local government purposes, Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, and Luton.

The move to unitary government in Bedfordshire provides an opportunity for the third sector in the Borough of Bedford and Central Bedfordshire to establish effective mechanisms for how it wishes to organise itself and ensure that its knowledge and expertise influence the design and delivery of local public services.

Why do we need Assemblies for Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire?

Third sector organisations have told us that:

  • There are not many opportunities to discuss and debate the issues that affect them
  • There is little or no third sector representation at some key meetings and partnerships
  • There is no transparent process for third sector organisations to agree whom it wants to represent them at key meetings, and there is limited training, support and rarely any terms of reference for those representing the sector

The aims of the Assemblies

The Assemblies will provide an opportunity to:

  • Brief the local third sector on the current local partnership arrangements and some of the issues that may impact on the sector
  • Discuss and agree how the Assembly will operate
  • Network with colleagues from both the statutory and third sector

‘The third sector has a major role in ensuring that the voices of the most excluded people are heard and should seek to inform and influence services.’

‘Meaningful third sector participation is a crucial element of an effective Local Strategic Partnership, helping it to agree the local vision, set priorities and deliver services to reflect the needs and aspirations of local communities.’
