Bossard House - The New Citizone

Bossard House, home to Voluntary and Community Action, Citizens Advice Bureau and the Registrar is in the process of being transformed into a new Citizone Point of Presence (PoP).

Once open, the PoP will allow local people to use services from the district, county and town councils, give Voluntary and Community Action extra space to meet their growing needs (including interview rooms and additional space for visitors to use our funding and library resources), and will update the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) facilities.

Councillor Carole Hegley, who has Executive responsibility for customer service said “Instead of needing to go to different buildings or using different phone numbers, residents will be able to view planning applications, report damaged road signs and find out what day their green bin will be collected, all under the same roof." The added bonus is that these same residents will be more aware of services on offer at CAB and Voluntary and Community Action, and in particular the Volunteer Centre will be able to promote volunteering to many new local people.

Cost

The estimated cost of the refurbishment and extension is calculated at £400K. Voluntary and Community Action have secured a ChangeUp grant of £48K towards capital expenditure and Bedfordshire County Council are contributing £100K leaving South Bedfordshire District Council to fund the rest of the work.

Building Works

Work began in November 2006 and is scheduled to be complete by early April 2007. During this time there will be some disruption to services and we will do our best to keep this to a minimum. Visitors will need to park in the adjoining West Street Multi-Storey Car Park as there are no parking spaces at Bossard House.

See below for a photo story of the work being carried out.

In November (2006) contractors completely gutted the old cash office and started dismantling the double garage at the back. This is where the extension will be built to house the new PoP and extend the first floor offices currently used by Voluntary and Community Action. The pictures below show the first few tiles coming off the old garage and a couple of weeks later in December (with the garage taken away) contractors preparing the foundations for the new extension.

Early January 2007 saw the arrival of two large portakabins sitting in the Bossard House car park. This caused some excitement in the Voluntary and Community Action office because staff will have more space when they move into these cabins than they are currently used to. CAB have moved into the portakabins first whilst refurbishing work is carried out in their offices, including a reception area and a new consulting room. Staff from Voluntary and Community Action are expected to move into the cabins in the middle of February.

Local Councillor and representatives from CAB and VCA study building plans

After the foundations had been laid and the concrete floor nearly set (11 January) Sonia Moodey, Finance and Premises Manager at Voluntary and Community Action met with Cllr Carole Hegley from South Bedfordshire District Council, Pat Kingsnorth (Leighton-Linslade Town Council) and Barbara Brown (Citizens Advice Bureau) to examine plans for the new Citizone.

The new walls for the ground floor of the extension soon began to take form (the picture below was taken on 23rd January). On the 5th February the ceiling/upstairs floor was being laid.

The week beginning 19 February saw Voluntary and Community Action move into the portakabins and CAB move into their newly refurbished offices. The picture on the right was taken on 7 March and shows the ground floor windows being put in place and work on the roof taking shape.
