A Sporting Chance

A Sporting Chance – Local Group Needs New Volunteers

Dunstable and District Disabled Sports (D.A.D.D.S.) provides sporting and social activities for people with disabilities at Dunstable Leisure Centre on a Tuesday afternoon. They are looking to recruit some additional volunteers to offer support, help with the sessions and have a fun time playing games.

As a volunteer you will get the chance to be involved with up to 34 different activities including badminton, bowls, kurling (but without the ice) and swimming. Members participate in individual sporting activities and also have the opportunity to play team sports and attend sporting events.

D.A.D.D.S welcomes over 100 clients on a weekly basis, offering a full programme of leisure activities that provide opportunities for participation, integration and personal development.

As a volunteer you don’t need any special skills or experience - you don’t even have to be sporty! There are many ways to get involved from setting up equipment, to collecting money, taking round refreshments or helping to teach or coach.

Having the opportunity to actively participate and compete in sporting activities gives some members a great sense of achievement. For others the benefits include improved health and fitness, meeting new people and a change to try a variety of sports in a supportive environment.

Andy Jeron, Volunteer Journalist at Volunteer Centre South Bedfordshire explains how your help could benefit both you and the group:‘If you are free on a Tuesday afternoon and want the opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills, why not volunteer for D.A.D.D.S? Without the support offered by its volunteers D.A.D.D.S would struggle to offer its range of activities.‘
