Volunteering in the Public Sector

Many public sector organisations have volunteer programmes to help deliver their services, for example; school governors, services to support adults with mental health issues, translation services or running a village youth project. Volunteering opportunities such as these can be:

  • directly with a County Council Department/Service
  • through a voluntary organisation delivering services under contract to the County Council (e.g. service level agreement or tender).

If you are from the public sector and would like to know more about how the Volunteer Centre can work with you to develop and promote your opportunities please contact us. You may also like to read the item below on our partnership with Bedfordshire County Council.

Volunteer Centre Partnership with Bedfordshire County Council

The Volunteer Centres in Bedfordshire are working with the County Council to identify, develop and promote volunteering opportunities available through their own Departments/Services or other voluntary organisations delivering services under contract to the County Council (e.g. through a service level agreement or tender contract).

We would very much like to hear from you if you work in the County Council and have existing opportunities, would like to develop new opportunities or manage contracts where voluntary organisations use volunteers to deliver services.

We would also very much like to hear from voluntary organisations and community groups that use volunteers to deliver services on behalf of and/or under contract with the County Council, especially if you have existing opportunities that need volunteers or if you would like to develop new opportunities.

We will then follow up your response and work with you (or the department/service/voluntary organisation) to:

  • identify the nature of the volunteering opportunity(ies)
  • identify the benefits to the volunteer – this helps us to promote it
  • draw up a volunteer Role Description and Person Specification
  • register the department/service/voluntary organisation (if not already registered) and the volunteering opportunity(ies).

Thereafter, the Volunteer Centres will upload the opportunity(ies) to a national web-database and promote the opportunity locally. We can then provide information, advice and guidance to members of the public enquiring about specific opportunities or who express a desire to volunteer in a particular locality or type of work.

We are also planning to put on a short workshop to help County Council Departments/Services develop existing or new volunteer programmes and opportunities. If you are an employee (or Councillor) of the County Council and are interested in attending this workshop, please let us know and we will send you further information at a later date.
