New Shop in Dunstable offers Volunteering Opportunities
This week sees YMCA opening a brand new shop on Queensway in central Dunstable. The shop, selling items including fashion, jewellery, books, music and china and glass, will provide an opportunity for local people to browse and purchase quality items at a competitive price, whilst supporting the important work that the YMCA does with young people in our community.
Locally, the YMCA provide much needed funds to help young people back on their feet through support, counselling, training and careers advice. Shop Manager Audrey Arlidge is looking forward to recruit volunteers from the local area to assist staff in the effective operation of the shop, to maximise sales and profits and to present a professional image to the public. Audrey explains the benefits of getting involved in your local YMCA shop, ‘Volunteering at the YMCA is about more than giving time and sharing skills. It gives you the chance to learn about others, build new friendships and develop new skills and confidence.’ Your role could include maintaining displays, sorting and pricing stock and serving customers, with the chance to specialise in an area of personal interest, such as fashions, jewellery, books, music or film.
The shop is open Monday-Saturday daytime with morning and afternoon shifts, although there are roles available that offer greater flexibility if required. The YMCA aims to provide everyone - staff, volunteers and young people - with opportunities for personal development so a full induction and ongoing support will be provided. Out-of-pocket expenses such as travel are reimbursed, and if you claim benefits, you can still volunteer without your benefits being affected, but you are advised to inform your local Job Centre.
The YMCA is only able to provide its vital support services to young people in Bedfordshire and across the UK due to the income generated by its network of shops. Why not get involved and play a part in helping young people in your local community fulfil their potential. Even an hour a week could make a big difference.
