Learning Events for New and Existing Trustees and Committee Members

Do you want to help a local club, community group or school continue its good work, but aren’t sure what’s involved in being a trustee, committee member or school governor?

Two learning events taking place in central Leighton Buzzard on consecutive Thursday evenings could be the answer. They are intended for anyone who is considering becoming a volunteer in these roles and wants to find out more, as well as people already volunteering who want to refresh their skills and update their knowledge.

Board members, whether called trustees, committee members or school governors help ensure that good governance is practised and a clear strategic direction is provided for their organisation. Throughout South Bedfordshire there are numerous organisations which need volunteers in these roles and many do not require previous experience, just an interest in their area of work.

For example, Leighton Linslade Access for All is asking for new committee members, anyone who has a genuine interest or knowledge of physical disability (mobility, sight or hearing), to assist in producing accurate and informative Access Guides for residents and visitors to Leighton Linslade and surrounding villages.

Schools across South Bedfordshire need school governors. While some governors may have qualifications or professional skills that are directly helpful to their school, many have just life experience and want to make a positive contribution to children’s education.

Dunstable Mencap is looking for people to join its General Committee who are keen in helping those with a learning disability to lead full lives. Committee members attend meetings, help out at box collections during the summer months, and assist at the Dunstable and Houghton Regis Gateway Club where Mencap members take part in activities such as drawing, doing jigsaws and playing table tennis.

The forthcoming learning events are organised by Voluntary and Community Action South Bedfordshire and take place in Bossard House, West Street, 7-9pm on 28 February and 6 March.

The first session, Roles and Responsibilities on 28 February, will explain the general roles and responsibilities of a management committee or board and what makes an effective committee. It will also look at practical tool kits and other learning materials that can help trustees build skills and confidence.

Reducing Risks – a Guide to Trustee Liabilities on 6 March covers who a management committee is accountable to, how to keep it legal, and a brief overview of the Charities Act 2006.
