Appeal for volunteers from Alzheimer's Support Group
Dementia is a term used to describe various progressive brain disorders.
There are over 100 different types of dementia. The most common are Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies. Symptoms of dementia include loss of memory, confusion and problems with speech and understanding.
The Alzheimer's Society estimates that there are currently over 700,000 people in the UK with dementia. The Leighton Buzzard Alzheimer’s Support Group provides an opportunity for carers of people with dementia to get together and meet people in the same situation. Marjorie a carer who attends the group says ‘“I find it very realxing and theraputic and it is good to talk to people who are in the same position as yourself, also to help new people who come to the club”
The group is in urgent need for more volunteers. They are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to meet, greet and listen to carers of people with dementia. They have weekly drop-in sessions in Leighton Buzzard from 10am - 2pm on Tuesday, which gives carers a much needed opportunity to get out of the house and socialise, and have the chance to talk about particular issues and difficulties they may be experiencing. The role involves providing support and a listening ear, helping with tea/coffee etc. No specific skills necessary, just an interest in or understanding of dementia or counselling skills useful but not essential as all volunteers will receive introductory training before undertaking the role.
Or are you a qualified therapist? The support group is also looking to improve the quality of life for the carers. They would love to be able to offer occasional additional support in the form of alternative therapies such as Reiki, Reflexology, Indian Head Massage etc. If you are able to offer a couple of hours every month or two, they would love to hear from you!
For further information on these opportunities please contact Lucy Crayk, Volunteering Officer at the Volunteer Centre on 01525 850559 or email volunteer@action-southbeds.org.uk If you would like to explore other volunteering opportunities that are available in South Bedfordshire please contact Lucy for a Volunteering Directory or to arrange an informal chat.
