Support Older People to Have a Voice

Induction training 6th & 13th February 2008

Do you ever feel no-one listens to you or takes notice of what you want? Do you get frustrated when it’s something that affects you first and foremost, and still no-one takes notice of your views?

Bedfordshire Advocacy Service for Older People works with older people to enable them to get their voices heard and their wishes listened to. The charity helps older people, some of whom may have physical and mental health problems including dementia, to retain their dignity, independence and control of their lives.

Bedfordshire Advocacy Service is seeking more volunteers to work together with referred clients and try to resolve any problems facing the client. Issues can vary from legal or financial matters to finding recreational or social activities.

Volunteers undergo two days induction training, covering topics such as listening and communication skills, dementia, and legislation, and receive ongoing support. The next induction course is on 6th and 13th February in Mid Bedfordshire.

Tasks for volunteers usually involve visiting clients in their homes, writing letters, researching information, and communicating with relevant parties, while ensuring the client’s wishes are respected at all times.

Volunteers for Bedfordshire Advocacy Service for Older People need to have good listening, communication and information gathering skills, be empathetic and compassionate, and be able to remain objective. Own transport is a benefit but not essential.

The time commitment asked for by the charity is approximately half a day per week, Monday - Friday. Out of pocket expenses can be claimed.
