Get Active! Get Creative!
and help young people have fun!

This summer there are two great opportunities for local people to help out with sport and/or arts activities for the benefit of local youngsters. So if you are interested in the theatre, are a musician, enjoy drama, dance, are creative, or enjoy sports, your enthusiasm would be greatly appreciated at the Grove Theatre or at a B*! Festival event this summer.

The B*! Festival kicks off on the 30th July and will provide a range of activities for 13-19 year-olds throughout South Bedfordshire until the 16th August. Activities include water sports, scuba diving, self defence, archery, wall climbing, mountain biking, DJ/mixing, film production and drama workshops. This will be followed by a huge one-day event on the 31st August called the ‘Big Bash’ to celebrate the success of the B*! Festival and includes an ‘It’s a Knockout ‘ competition and a mixture of showcases. Young people interested in taking part in these activities should contact LuBYA (Luton and Bedfordshire Youth Association) on 01582 660144 and anybody who would like to help run the workshops and share their expertise and passion with young people during this event should contact the Volunteer Centre (details below).

In addition to the above, the Grove Musical Theatre is presenting its debut performance this summer with up to 100 young people putting on a full scale production of the musical 'Oliver'. They are looking for capable volunteer musicians to work with the project during the rehearsals and performances (7-19 August), Wardrobe Team assistants with a creative eye, resourceful nature and sewing skills, a volunteer to assist the Stage Manager in all aspects of stage maintenance and Theatre Chaperones to register the children on arrival, see the children on and off stage and look after their welfare throughout the performance.

Grove Theatre also has more long-term volunteering opportunities if anybody is interested in giving Theatre tours to school children and groups of adults?  After full training, volunteers will take tours of up to 45 minutes in length, in which time the volunteer will explain the history of Grove Theatre and give information about the shows, giving groups access to the stage, auditorium, dressing rooms and the 'Green Room'. An interest in the theatre and good communication skills is a necessity for this 'time flexible' role.

For further information on any of the above opportunities, please contact Lucy or Rebecca at the Volunteer Centre at Voluntary and Community Action on 01525 850559 or email volunteer@action-southbeds.org.uk. If you would like to explore other volunteering opportunities that are available in South Bedfordshire please contact the Volunteer Centre for a Volunteering Directory or to arrange an informal chat.
