On 1 April 2009, two unitary authorities replaced the previous three districts and county council structure. Bedford Borough Council became a unitary authority covering its existing geographical area and a new unitary authority, Central Bedfordshire Council, was formed to cover Mid Bedfordshire and South Bedfordshire.
Structure and Services
The Council's management structure consists of a Chief Executive, four directorates:
responsible for a range of services, many of which will impact on the work of the third sector. Follow the links for a fuller description of the services provided, a structure chart and contact details of key staff.
Bedfordshire Shared Services
Most services are managed by each of the new Councils covering Central Bedfordshire and Bedford Borough. Some services will be shared between the two authorities so as to minimise risks to services and customers, minimise costs and retain small or specialist services, see the current list.
Strategic and Directorate Plans
The Council has agreed a Strategic Plan for 2009-11 setting out the vision, values and priorities of the new Council:
“Our Vision is to improve the quality of life of all in Central Bedfordshire, and enhance the unique character of our communities and our environment.”
It has also established five key priorities that will shape its policy, business planning, allocation of resources and budgeting. These are:
- Supporting and caring for an ageing population
- Educating, protecting and providing opportunities for children and young people
- Managing growth effectively
- Creating safer communities
- Promoting healthier lifestyles
The Council has also agreed five draft Directorate Plans setting out how each service area will achieve the corporate vision, meet the priorities, how each service’s performance will be assessed and where specific service responsibilities lie.
