'Analysis in the Assessment Process' (formerly known as 'Assessment Skills')

Pre–requisites:  Level 1 Foundation (or equivalent basic training) in child protection/safeguarding children is an essential pre-requisite to this course.

Despite improvements in practice in relation to consistency, partnership working and inter agency understanding of assessment in relation to children in need and their families in recent years, research and inspection messages continue to highlight the challenge for practitioners of going beyond the gathering of information to effective analysis which informs recommendations. This course, which was developed from a practice development project undertaken within two local authorities [one of which was Leicestershire] between 2004-2006 and which has been continuously updated since that time to provide an opportunity for practitioners to gain knowledge in the following.

Monday 23rd & Tuesday 24th January 2012

Times: 9.30am  – 4.30pm

Aim: Increase practitioner skills and confidence in assessment, analysis and making judgements with children in need and their families.

Intended Learning Outcomes: By the end of the programme participants will have:

  • Explored current policy, legislation and the theoretical and value base of assessment practice.
  • Explored the place of analysis and judgements within assessment practice in the current context.
  • Had an opportunity to assess the strengths and weaknesses of their own and their agency practice and the use of analysis in assessments.
  • Been familiarised with models and approaches designed to strengthen their assessment practice with children in need.

The course draws partly on material contained within Dalzell and Sawyer’s National Children’s Bureau Toolkit, Putting Analysis into Assessment: a handbook for practitioners [2007]. All of the exercises contained within the handbook have been tested with practitioners and managers in training and workforce development settings, gaining positive feedback. New material has been added since the publication of the toolkit.

Training The Trainers

Training Course from CWDC                         cwdc

CWDC is planning a series of 'Train The Trainer' courses for trainers who have resources in place to deliver a new Level 4 Award.

CWDC has developed a new Level 4 Award in Work with Parents (Intense Support to Families with Multiple Needs) in partnership with City and Guilds.

The Train the Trainer programme will provide those working in this area with the knowledge and skills to deliver the award and a greater understanding of the assessment process.

We are also running a number of regional one-day workshops to support local areas develop their strategic training plans for practitioners working with families with multiple and complex needs.

Janet Blackledge, Assistant Director for Sector Leadership, said:

"We would encourage all practitioners and volunteers working in the sector to make sure their senior colleagues are aware of our upcoming train the trainer courses and workshops.

Our key aim is to increase the capacity and capability of everyone working with families with multiple and complex needs. The train the trainer courses will create a team of trainers able to deliver this new and exciting Level 4 Award to practitioners.

The one-day workshops supporting the development of strategic training plans will also expand the access, delivery and availability  of this new award to the workforce working with families with multiple and complex needs
."

Eligibility criteria for the train the trainer courses and workshops are currently being developed. The application process will be launched on our website in September

The 'Recruiting Safely National Training Programme', was delivered by a consortium led by Action for Children on behalf of the Children's Workforce Development Council.

The informative course, based upon the 'Recruiting Safely' Guidance (CWDC, 2009), highlighted the fact that safer recruitment is one of the first opportunities that we get to safeguard the children and young people that we work with and the importance of getting it right.
