Child Poverty: everybody's business
12th October 2010
The CastleGate, Newcastle Upon Tyne
Child poverty is everybody's business.
Figures report that one in three children in the UK live in poverty, and research shows that it impacts on a child's health, education and life expectancy.
This national conference will give you the opportunity to hear about and discuss some of the key issues, policies and plans to tackle child poverty.
With presentations from the Government's Child Poverty Unit, the Child Poverty Action Group, C4EO and Save the Children; and workshops by the National Children's Bureau, Fairbridge Training, Citizens Advice and Youth Access.
Previous NAVCA conferences around the change for children agenda have proved popular with local support and development organisations, voluntary organisations and community groups from across England and this low cost event is expected to book up quickly. There are opportunities for organisations to have stands and displays in the market stall area booking is required.
Booking deadline: 1 October 2010.

A learning event: New insights into children and families' experiences of parental substance misuse, 20 April 2010, London
Tuesday 20 April 2010
The Royal Institute of British Architects, London
Book Now: www.regonline.co.uk/alearningevent
The Children's Society STARS National Initiative invites you to attend this exciting learning event which will feature new research findings, new material from children and young people to inform practice and service provision, and discussion around current questions relevant to practice and policy on parental substance misuse.
The Family Life Project will present, for the first time, their end of study findings from the first longitudinal research into the experiences and understandings of children and young people affected by parental substance misuse. The Children's Society will also launch a new training and awareness-raising DVD resource developed by the STARS National Initiative to highlight children's perspectives on parental substance misuse. Delegates will have the opportunity to attend two of the following workshops to explore key questions raised by the research, and to contribute to briefing papers on these issues:
- Parents who use drugs: How can we create an environment for talk and support?
- Working with relationships: what can a family intervention look like?
- This is what can help me: what do young people want from services?
This learning event is for all professionals working with the issue of children, young people and families affected by parental drug or alcohol misuse, including practitioners, managers, commissioners, policy leads and trainers.
